Discrete Event Simulation (DES)

Definition:
The process of emulating real world operations in a controlled environment using computer technology.

Simulation modelling techniques capture complex system dynamics, allowing study teams to analyse, explain and predict the effects of different options at various stages through the lifecycle of a project. As a result, this information is used to determine which combination of infrastructure options, operating performance and operating rules best achieve project goals.

When done well, simulation modelling provides a process to enhance the knowledge and insights needed to make informed decisions, and can be used to examine:

• Potential outcomes without shutdowns, loss of production or capital commitment

• Capital cost reduction, avoidance and deferment

• Justification and proof of concept

• Greater efficiency leading to increased revenue

• Potential major operational savings

• Reduce commissioning time through system understanding

This well accepted form of modelling is generally applied where traditional techniques cannot be extended to cope with the complexities of proposed or existing system or network.

Engaging in DES also provides:

• A quantitative and rational process to enhance the knowledge and foresight needed to make informed decisions.

• A forum to allow previously held beliefs to be challenged and provide a platform to test alternative operating philosophies.

• Visibility and understanding to all engaged in the model building process as to impacts of changes, and greatly assist in gaining acceptance of the best possible outcomes from all stakeholders.

• A new basis for dynamic business improvement or decision making in a more powerful, complete and co-ordinated way than ever before.
